I was on the subway when the 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Miyagi prefecture yesterday afternoon. Luckily we had just come to a stop at a station and were able to get out. We all hurried out of the train and ran up the escalators - the shaking was getting worse, it wasn't stopping. People were panicking, holding on to the walls, eyes wide with fear.
「銀座一丁目」。。「発車します。駆け込み乗車はお止めください」。中々発車しないと思ったら手すりが不自然に揺れていた。地震？すぐ終わると思っていたら揺れが激しくなった。電車を降り改札に向けてエスカレーターを駆け上った。皆パニック。恐怖で目をまん丸くしながら壁にしがみつく。
First thing I did was get out my cell phone and try to contact people. No reception. 5 full bars and no reception. I looked up to see everyone staring at their cell phones in confusion. Why the hell is this not working?? I couldn't text, I couldn't call. The entire Japanese mobile network was over capacity.
iphoneを取り出して家族にメールを送ろうとした。エラー。通話もだめ。ドコモなら大丈夫だろうと思ったらドコモも繋がらない。電波は、いつも通り５本たっているのに繋がらない。日本のモバイルネットワークはパンクしていた。
When I finally got outside I was surprised to here an alert come from my iphone. It was a Facebook alert, "Jenn Peterson commented on your wall." The only application working on my iphone was Facebook. I soon realized that by connecting to my emobile wireless device, I could connect to the rest of the world. I sat on a bench opened my Mac and got on Facebook and twitter. It had only been a few minutes since the quake, but people from around the world were contacting me to see if I was ok.
メールの再送ボタンを押し続けながら地上にあがった。誰も繋がらない様子。一番必要な時に何で使えないの？！と携帯にいらついていたらiphoneのチャイムがなった。「Jenn Petersonがあなたのウォールにコメントしました。」Facebookは、繋がった！近くにベンチを見つけ、emobileとmacを取り出してインターネットに接続した。地震が始まって数分しか経っていなかったのに既に何人もの友達から連絡が来ていた。
In addition to getting connected with people, there were loads of information on the quake. Where it hit, which subway lines had closed, where people could go to for help, etc. While all mobile carriers were down, the internet was the only method of communication.
友達からの連絡以外に、様々の人が地震に関する情報を流していた。どこで起きたか、どの路線が停止していて、どこに避難すれば良いのか。。すべてSNSに載っていた。モバイル通信が完全にダウンしていた時、インターネットとSNSは全力で活躍していた。
Someone had even started a Facebook fanpage to confirm safety of people. You became a fan of that page to let others know that you were safe. Twitter was being used in the same way. It really was something.
安否を確認するファンページまで出来ていた。参加すると自分の安否を登録できて、自分の友達の中でだれが無事かも確認できる。本当に凄かった。
This morning I went on google Japan to search for ways I could donate to helping those in need, but the only search results that came up were news on the quake. I decided to see if twitter would have something and there it was, the most recent tweet on my page - Donate to the people affected by the quake. I saw the possibility of SNS as the next search engine - the days of "googling" for information may be soon over.
今朝、地震の被害者の人々にドネーションをしたいと思いグーグルを検索したら中々欲しい結果が出てこなかった。地震関連のニュースだけ。ツイッターで誰かがつぶやいているかなと思いツイッターを開いたら、私のタイムラインの最新ツイーとがまさにそうだった。検索ツールとしての凄さも実感した。「ググる」という概念ももうそろそろなくなるんだろうな。
Going forth, the Internet and SNS will play an increasingly large role in connecting people in time of need and become the center of information. SNS is not just a playground where you connect with friends and share your daily happenings - it's a lifeline.
今後、インターネットそしてSNSは、人と人を繋ぐツールとしてより活躍する。今回の災害をきっかけSNSに登録する人々が増えることを願っている。SNSは、ただの遊び場ではない。ライフラインでもある。
Through yesterday's catastrophe, we saw and felt firsthand the power of SNS applications. I believe that yesterday was SNS's Independence Day. It proved that it wasn't just a normal telecommunication tool. It's a whole different technology with endless possibilities.
昨日は、SNSの独立記念日だった。モバイル通信、固定通信、いわゆる普通のコミュニケーションツールという枠から独立した。SNSは、別物。無限な可能性を持つ最新のテクノロジーである。
